Introduction:
This is a research study about understanding and/or training human cognition
conducted by Professors Aaron Seitz and Susanne Jaeggi. Below you will find
information regarding what you will do in this research study, how much time you
will be required to commit if you decide to participate, what equipment you will
need and/or be provided, what benefits you will be provided, how our research
team will protect your identity and data, and who you can contact if you have
any questions, concerns, or complaints. Please note, this research study is
strictly voluntary and you have the right to withdraw from the study at any time
without penalty.
What happens if I say yes, I want to be in
this research?
-
You will be presented with stimuli (e.g., visual, auditory, tactile,
olfactory, etc)
and make responses regarding their patterns. These will challenge your
perceptual,
memory, attentional, and/or decision making abilities.
-
Your performance on these challenges is recorded in a datafile that is
associated
with a unique subject ID so that your identity will be protected. Any
information
that can identify you will be stored separately from the data collected
in these
tasks.
- You will complete a variety of questionnaires about your demographics,
categories of
thoughts, feelings, experiences, and characteristics. In cases where you
are asked
questions surrounding sensitive topics such as mental health, negative
health
conditions, and/or substance use, you will be prefaced with instructions
stating
that it is acceptable to skip questions that are a matter of personal
concern/sensitivity.
- You will be asked to participate in 22 experimental sessions that will
last up to 30
minutes.
- You will be asked to download experimental software for these sessions
onto your own
computer, tablet, or smartphone.
- This study is designed to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions
that may
provide potential cognitive benefits. However, we do not know whether
this
intervention is effective. Further, you may be randomly assigned among
conditions
for which there are different degrees of evidence regarding whether or
not they are
effective.
What benefits will I receive from
participating?
You may receive potential cognitive gains as a result of
training and/or gain a better understanding of your cognition.
Will I be paid for my participation?
Upon completion of the study, you will be entered into a
monthly Grand Prize drawing for a chance to win a brand new iPad (10.2 Retina
display with 32 GB of storage) or a gift card valued $20-100. You will also earn
entries into a weekly give-away for a chance to win $5 or $10 gift cards. Entries
are given for each completed session and these will be confirmed in weekly e-mails.
Odds of winning depend upon the number of eligible entries. To receive an entry into
the give-away, without participating you can accept the consent, download the App
and register with your subject ID (as per instructions provided in an email that you
will receive). Additional entries are provided upon successful completion of each
session and bonus entries may be awarded for completion of the study. Completion of
all sessions is required to be eligible for the grand prizes.
How will my identity and data be protected?
We note that data will be used in research publications and
may be shared with other researchers, and/or shared in public data sharing
repositories. Your responses will be kept confidential, and no one will be able to
link your answers back to you. If you include your name or other information that
could be used to identify you in your responses then we will take measures to remove
that from the data files to protect your confidentiality. We will keep any records
that can be used to identify you confidential and this will not be shared with
anyone outside the research team. If you decide to discontinue participation
altogether, your data will be deleted upon request if we have the capacity to
identify which data is yours.
